Top Cyber Security Threats Facing SMEs (Part 2)

May 14, 2025 | cloud services, Cyber Security

While phishing, ransomware and poor password practices are widespread issues, there are other critical vulnerabilities many SMEs overlook. From outdated software to insider threats and insecure mobile devices, here are three more risks that could put your business at serious risk (and how to stay ahead of them).

4. Unpatched Software

Outdated or unpatched software often contains known vulnerabilities that hackers can easily exploit. SMEs are particularly at risk when updates are delayed or overlooked across their systems and devices. These security gaps are well-documented and actively targeted by cyber criminals scanning for easy entry points.

How to protect your business:

  1. Set up automatic updates for operating systems and applications
  2. Schedule regular checks for software updates and firmware
  3. Replace unsupported software and outdated platforms
  4. Use patch management tools for centralised control e.g Microsoft Intune

5. Insider Threats

Not all cyber threats come from outside your organisation. Employees, contractors or third parties can cause harm (either deliberately or accidentally) through poor handling of data or misuse of systems. Insider threats are especially difficult to detect because the individuals already have access to your network and resources.

How to protect your business:

  1. Limit access to sensitive files based on role or department
  2. Monitor user activity to spot unusual behaviour
  3. Conduct background checks on new hires and vendors
  4. Deliver regular staff training on data protection and IT policies

6. Poor Mobile Device Security

With more teams working remotely or on the go, mobile devices have become a key entry point for attackers. Unsecured smartphones, tablets and laptops can expose business data if lost, stolen or hacked. These devices are often overlooked when applying security policies, making them easy targets.

How to protect your business:

  1. Use mobile device management (MDM) tools to enforce security
  2. Require PINs or biometric access on all business devices
  3. Ensure remote access goes through secure VPNs
  4. Set up device tracking and remote wipe capabilities
