Start with Cyber Security Basics
Most breaches begin with the obvious stuff. Old software, missed backups and weak passwords. Fix those first and you could cut out a surprising amount of risk. Start by listing what you actually have: servers, cloud accounts, third party services and who has access to them. It may sound dull, but without that initial inventory, you’re going to be guessing when something breaks.
Keep backups that are separate from your main systems. Test restores occasionally so that you don’t discover a corrupt backup at the worst possible moment. Use automatic updates where you can, but test critical systems first because updates can sometimes (very annoyingly) break things. Finally, forcing multi-factor authentication across email and admin accounts is becoming more and more important.
It’s not perfect, yet it stops a lot of attacks in their tracks.
Train People, Often
People will click things. It’s just how we are when we’re busy or distracted. Regular training lowers the chance of someone opening a malicious email attachment or giving away credentials. Short, real world examples work better than long manuals. Run a few simulated phishing tests, then follow up with quick, practical feedback to make sure the lessons stick.
Make reporting easy. A single click to flag a suspicious email saves time. Keep policies short and usable with no huge documents that get ignored. From what we’ve seen, small reminders and a little encouragement can make staff far more cautious, which can ultimately help your whole security network.
Use the Right Tools, with Local Support
Good tools matter, but they need to be managed. Patch management, endpoint protection, device management and encrypted backups make up the backbone of a modern setup. Use a password manager, enforce secure Wi Fi standards and keep firmware up to date. Don’t forget mobile devices, they are often the weakest link.
If you want help pulling this together, iTEXS provides managed IT, cyber security solutions and practical IT support across Cambridgeshire. We do audits, secure configurations and ongoing support so your systems stay maintained rather than forgotten.
